Leaving Confusion | Songs for a Broken City | Whispered PromiseVoice to Spirit - Leaving Confusion (2011)01 Only You : (Psalm 27:6, Psalm 97:11-12, Ephesians 2:4-5 )This is a praise song, being sung by Gods followers amongst His followers. In other words, a congregation gathering together in agreement that God is the only thing worth praising. The song goes through a number of ideas that no matter what, its only God. That through God we are made alive and set free from the death that sin leads. This song also speaks out towards the negative criticisms received for being a christian, that “no matter what they think or say, its only You (God)”. The last line of both the verses goes “This is why we do the things we do.” This line is a reference to a change in living, putting down worldly pursuits, putting others first, loving and forgiving when we do not wish to, following Christ commandments from the new testament. God has given us life, so we follow in His ways. 02 Oh Child (Psalm 91, John 3:16) This songs can be understood from different points of view, but they always lead back to the same meaning. Ultimately it is an encouragement to those who follow the Lord, but have fallen on hard times. That as long as we keep moving towards God, He will be there for us. The verses go on to say that God sees our tears, hears our prayers, and has a plan to use us. After all God sent is only Son, that if we would believe in Him, we would gain eternal life. The child refereed in this song is a child of God, but also could represent a literal child that a mother is singing to encourage them of Gods love. No matter what circumstance, pain, or trial, that God is always there for us. 03 Take Rest (Psalm 37) (Instrumental) 04 Pleased to Say 1/4 (Matthew 7:7) This is the first song of the “Confusion Suite”, in which the album is named after. All together, there are four songs in an ABAB format. A call from a none believer, a response from a believer, then a realization from the non believer to a call from the believer(a gospel message). In this first song we first hear a pessimistic influenced lyric about how hard life can be and that people can conform to what the masses follow or convince themselves to be true in respect to how their feelings react. The second set of lyrics comes in to almost challenge that point of view, as well as one given by a christian. This idea comes from a point of view of someone who is tired of judgment and hypocrites from any teaching trying to decipher truth. This song is not meant to answer any questions, but ask them. What are we to do? I have an emptiness in my life, but how do I fill it? I hear and see both negatives and positives from any teachings, but what is right? Who lives correctly? Is there more to life? Is what I believe the truth, or am I falling in step? 05 In the Beginning (Genesis 1) (Instrumental) 06 More to Life 2/4 (1 John 4:9-10) This is the second song of the “Confusion Suite”. This is the response to track four. The song asks for time to share what the believer knows of God and His Love. The song starts by relating to the person that they understand there point of view, as most Christians at one point in their life entertained doubt. Then goes on to share Gods love for them. This in many ways is seen as a abstraction from a witnessing the gospel. Its also just a first encounter, no one can be saved until they are called and there hearts prepared. This song is trying to start the conversation for the transformation. No condemnation or judgment, just the truth of how much He (God) Loves them. 07 Sound of Regret (James 4:17, Romans 7:15) This is a song that communicates the feeling of doing something wrong, translating it to a heavy beating heart as the sound of your regret. There are three scenarios that are covered. The first is lying, the second is a guilty conscience, and the third is casting blame. Lying in this instance is seen as lying to protect ones self from the consequences of there actions, then this feeds the guilty conscience knowing what they did. Then finally even in being caught, the person still tries to protect themselves by casting blame in either direction to how they are right or free from blame. In all three scenarios, the person knows of their sins and is reminded of it by their hard beating heart. Even though other people may not know the sins, God does. 08 My King (Hebrews 13:8, Revelation 4:8) Though our last album, “Songs for a Broken City”, was a worship remix album, we decided to make this album more in the contemporary genre. Even with this in mind, we couldn’t help having at least one worship song, that song is this. My King is a very straight forward worship song of the wondrous attributes of God. In times of war He is our peace. In times of drought, He is our water. In times of hopelessness, He is our hope. This is why we sing praises to you my King, The same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. This is why we sing praises to you my King, Who was and is, and is to come. 09 Day After Day (James 1:12) (Instrumental) 10 Around, Around 3/4 (Matthew 7:24) This is the third song of the “Confusion Suite”. We hear now back from the non-believer, the realization of where they are and how they start to realize they want out. The problem is that they know what is right, but are continually pulled back. This idea is realized in the analogy of quick sand, the more you struggle the hard it becomes to escape. This person knows the decision at hand and understands that are caught spinning around in circle with the decisions at hand. This song has truth as well to a believer who fall back into old sin. 11 Who Where We (Matthew 7:3-5, I John 1:9) There are the types of Christians that make the faith look bad for the rest of us. People who cast judgment, people who condemn, people who are hypocritical and people who are self righteous. The truth is that any of us can act this way at any point, but by the grace of God we are forgiven and changed of our ways. This song is based on a fictional character who realizes that they have become this way and asks God for forgiveness. 12 Through the Leaves (Philippians 4:8) (Instrumental) 13 Truth in My Eyes (1 Thessalonians 5:11, James 1:19) This is a song based on how somebody feels inside, but is unable to speak the truth they hope is seen in their eyes. Basically there is a break down in communication where a person feels they can't speak, while people close to them are not asking what's going on. This could be as simple as seeing a friend who seems upset/depressed and really making sure they are OK. People can be too polite when it comes to their own problems not wanting to burden others when they need help. This song is trying to be an encouragement to both parties to seek one and other. 14 Soul of the Dead man 4/4 (John 14:6, 1 Thessalonians 5:2) This is the fourth song of the “Confusion Suite”. Its a song from the believers point of view pleading the non-believer to see truth. Its asking them to stop delaying and give themselves to Jesus. Maybe there ways got them through before and might work again, but nobody knows their time to go. Its asking them to not wait until its to late, that the only way to be saved is through Christ. This last song is also very important to the album. Not only does it finish the confusion suite, but its our “key song”. Through this song you can unlock the meaning to the rest of our album. All vocal track prior to this are implicit Christian songs. Meaning there Christian themes and references, but still God and Jesus are only referenced as You or He ect.. Where most Christians will understand these themes, some non-believers may not. Now this was done on purpose. We wanted this album to be a tool as a gateway into a Christ like thinking and believing. At first we considered having the whole album implicit, but came to the conclusion that we wanted people to know by the end of the album exactly what we are singing about. That is why the last song is an explicit Christian song singing how Jesus is the only way. Voice to Spirit - Songs for a Broken City (2008)Coming soon...Forever Daydream - Whispered Promise (2005)01. 88 Strings :A collective of drum beats I’ve created over the years with some mellow strings laid in. 02. As the Tide come in : This song is about how God has a plan for us and how His will in our life should ultimately be our highest goal. Its hard concept to understand at times, but it’s the Lords timing for us, not our own, that I feel we get ourselves caught up in. The Lord is the tide leading us, the driftwood, to where we should go and be. If we choose to, we can easily allow our selves to float where He leads us. But it seems more often than not, we catch and snag our branches on the shore with our own desires. We see things happening in our life; people around us acting contrary to the Lords desire for us. A choice needs to be made, actively pursuer His righteousness or fall into our own sin. We can no longer stay in our own path of destruction. We need to look into our life and see where we stand; with the desires of the Lord or our own. “...We shall not remain the same, we’ll learn.” 03. Creation : The basis of this song, you may have guessed, is built upon the idea of the world being created by the almighty Creator. There is only a small vocal part in this song “I think I’ve heard about it”. Referring to the idea that not everyone knows what we know. 04. As If I where Here : This song, put simply, is about the longing to know whom that special person for you. “Call my name as if I where here...” wherever you are, near or far, call to me so that I might find you. I am looking for you, where are you my (love)? I’m straining my ear trying to listen for your voice. Like a loud earthquake I hear in the distance, I wish to hear your voice calling me. 05. Ignition : This song is based upon the idea of being on fire for the Lord, that He consumes you. Wanting so bad to serve the Lord, that the desire becomes a fire with in you. In the beginning of the “Whispered Promise” project, I predicted this to be the albums single. I put (maybe) the most work and effort into this song out of all the songs I have written. Its funny how predictions are often incorrect. 06. No One : There is something in me that no one can replace, no one can take, its mine, His love. 07. Here We Go Again : This song speaks about sin in general. How I dislike my human nature of constantly sinning. How I am often disappointing myself when I try to overcome its trials by myself. 08. My Friend : The deepest and most spiritually influenced song I’ve written to date. If you read the lyrics you will see there is only one thing I could be speaking about, the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ. 09. Interlude : in·ter·lude (in't?r-lûd') Music. A short piece inserted between the parts of a longer composition. 10. Some one like us : Even though this song does not curtain lyrics, it still has its meanings. It’s about feeling on the outside and being alone. When it reality your not, there is some on else like us. Even when the world tries to portray our (Christians) lives as being a ridiculous reluctance to what is good and natural (Sin has never been good or natural). Never feel alone with your beliefs; there are always others like us. 11. Please and thank you : This song is actually quite interesting to me. The title insists, possibly, about being polite. It’s always good to say please and thank you, but that, shall we say is the tip of the ice burg. When we look deeper into this melodic event, we begin to hear a vocal in the background. Its, I guess, more of a subliminal lyric. When revered, you will hear the lyrics, “ I’m like espionage, trying not to get caught, in a place I shouldn’t be trying not to be seen, black holes are around me, they surround me, trying to take it from me, I wont give in, they can keep there sin, I’m like espionage”. It’s about being in the world, but not being of the world. 12. The Ghost I am : As the lyrics describe, it’s about a dream. 13. Umean2me : “You mean so much more to me than you know” This songs meaning is about peace and joy, a simple progression with not a minor note in it, it portrays this feeling. The lyrics are to be song to someone special in your life. There was no one person in specific the song was written for. 14. Theme : This lyric is the theme song to my music career (thus far). |
